about

This piece of music is a journey through time.

Summoned by Stirling's legendary wolf, we’re carried by the stream through the colourful history of Tolbooth: Construction of the original buildings; the bustle of Broad Street with Tolbooth dominating; prisoners wallowing in the jail condemned as the worst in Scotland; the hangings at Mercat Cross - notably those resulting from the unrest of The Radical War, and that of the last man to be hanged in Stirling, Allan Mair; and finally to the renovation and repurposing of Tolbooth as Stirling’s vibrant and and vital venue for live music and the arts.

The bell and chimes from Tolbooth’s clock tower feature throughout the piece, tolling in sorrow and ringing in celebration.

A Tale of Tolbooth was commissioned for the exhibition of the same name held in the gallery space in Tolbooth, Stirling during June and July 2021.

"Tolbooth Stirling in association with Creative Scotland, and Scene Stirling commissioned five Visual Artists to each create a piece of work, to be exhibited in a group show at Tolbooth Gallery.

Titled ‘A Tale Of Tolbooth’, the exhibition ... will show the Tolbooth through the ages, taking inspiration from the buildings varied past and exciting present. Each of the artists have created a bespoke piece as their response to the Tolbooth’s unique history and current place in Stirling’s vibrant arts scene."

I am very grateful to Tolbooth Stirling and Creative Scotland who funded this commission, and who both continue to support and nurture valuable creativity and innovation in Scotland.
